Littleton, Colorado is one of the classic suburbs in the Denver Metro area. The city was founded back in 1890 and now has around 47,000 residents. The town is located on the southwestern side of Denver and is just east of the Rocky Mountains.

One of the things that Littleton is well known for is its great neighborhoods and communities to live in. There are perfect places to live no matter what your lifestyle and preferences are.

Littleton is mostly comprised of single-family residences, but there are also plenty of condos, townhomes, luxury homes, and multi-family residences to choose from. There are also a few really high-end communities to live in that have completely gated communities.

The home prices in Littleton are quite high, as we’ll discuss in the cons section, but Littleton residents agree that the communities and neighborhoods there are well worth the money.

2. Great Weather

Throughout the year, the temperature ranges from 23°F in the winter to 88°F in the summer. Occasionally, temps drop below 7°F in the winter and go above 95°F in the summer. The hot season lasts for 3 months from around June 7 to September 14, with an average day-by-day high temperature above 79°F. The cold season lasts for 3.5 months, from November 20 to March 4, with a stable day-by-day high temperature of around 53°F. 

In general, Littleton has great weather consistently. Summers are warm and winters are great for snow lovers. Colorado, in general, is known for being sunny all year round which helps it feel nice, even in the wintertime.

Spring and fall are always lovely and ideal for partaking in picnics, outside, and other sporting exercises.

3. Various Outdoors Activities

One reason why Littleton is so famous is due to its large number of open areas for sporting activities and outdoor hobbies. There are great spots for fishing, golfing, hiking, water-skiing, biking, and much more.

To give you some context to this, Littleton has 117 different trails for its residents to enjoy. The city also has over 1,400 acres of parks. It is also home to two of Colorado’s state parks.

There is something for everybody here, and above all, everything is close by!

4. Central Location

One of the most appealing aspects of Littleton living is its incredible location. You can be in the heart of Denver’s downtown area in just 23 minutes!

Not only that but the city of Littleton is also nestled right in the middle of a bunch of popular Denver suburbs. You can get to Lakewood, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, or Centennial in anywhere from 5-20 minutes.

Littleton is also just a quick 15-20 minute drive from the base of the Rocky Mountains.

5. Friendly People

Littleton is known for its friendly climate. Residents are welcoming and helpful. The communities are very warm and open to people of all different backgrounds and lifestyles. There are plenty of people to meet and friends to make in Littleton, Colorado!

As is the case in many Colorado cities, Littleton has a high cost of living. Compared to the average cost of living in Colorado and the nation, Littleton is quite a bit pricier. The median household income in Littleton is around $76,000, but many agree that a $100,000 yearly income is needed to live comfortably. In 2018, a report stated that a $100,200 salary is expected to buy a “normal” Colorado home.

As you can see in the table above, Littleton’s costs are well above average overall and in grocery, housing, and transportation. It is cheaper, though, in terms of health and utilities.

Comparing Littleton to some of its neighboring cities, it is more expensive than Lakewood, but a little bit cheaper than Centennial, Lone Tree, and Highlands Ranch.

2. Expensive & Competitive Housing Market

This was mentioned a little bit above, but we wanted to separate Littleton’s housing situation into its own con. Housing here in this city is very expensive. For example, the median home price is $627,000 which is more than double that of the nation’s average at $291,700. This can make it very hard for first-time homebuyers and people moving to Colorado from out of state to find a home that fits their needs at a good price.

Not only that but there is a ton of competition to move to Littleton. It is common, especially in the housing market that we’ve seen recently, for there to be over 10 offers on a home that are tens of thousands above the asking price. Many Coloradans tend to blame this on the Californians that are relocating to Colorado!

3. Crowded Trails

There has been a considerable influx of traffic on the neighborhood trails in the Littleton area. It is now common to see handfuls of people going on walks and hikes whereas in the past you’d only pass by a few. Stopping at the trailhead never used to be an issue – now, it is. An ever-increasing number of spots around the state is requiring early bookings to camp and using pay-to-play approaches in an endeavor to adapt to a surge of people entering the outdoor entertainment space.

Sure, an increase of people enjoying the great outdoor areas of Littleton, Colorado is great. That being said, overcrowding can destroy the serenity that is regularly looked for when entering the great outdoors.

4. Increasing Traffic

Littleton has seen its days of empty roads, but those have come to an end. Since Littleton has such a centralized location, lots of people have to drive through or around it, especially during rush hour. C-470 and other major highways in the Littleton area can get extremely packed, especially from 3:00-7:00 pm on weekdays.

The worst part is there is a ton of road construction around the Littleton area to keep up with maintaining the roads. This obviously has not been helping the traffic situation. They have also been expanding some roads and highways recently, which slows things down considerably.

5. Painfully Dry

Colorado is well known for being a very dry state. Coloradans are very happy to tell anyone and everyone that the state is dryer than Pheonix, Arizona.

Littleton is no exception. It sees very little rain and the winters can be brutally dry. Nose bleeds, cracked knuckles, peeling skin on the face, etc are common side effects to the dry climate of the city.

Conclusion

Littleton hasn’t seen a great deal of development of new residents in recent years however kept a small, consistent measure of new residents moving into the city. The population has reached 47,035 with a population development rate of 0.1% somewhat recently and 7.4% in the last five years. Living in Littleton has a suburban feel, which can be pleasant for families searching for more space than bigger thickly stuffed cities for the money and a decent region to raise children.

The city is loaded up with numerous youthful adults and people hoping to begin a family. The middle age in the town is around 41 years of age. The commonplace family has on average 3.0 people, including children and parents. The city has a great deal to bring to the table with various cultures seen throughout the town. As far as variety, on a national level, Littleton ranks number 942, which is over the national normal for variety, and on a state level ranks 6, which is over the state average.
